Post-Soft Tissue Graft Care Instructions
After undergoing a soft tissue graft, it’s important to follow these instructions for proper healing:
Manage Bleeding: Avoid probing the area with your tongue or fingers. Bite down on a gauze pad placed on the wound for 30 minutes to reduce bleeding. Some bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours. Contact our office if bleeding continues.
Medication: Take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses, as directed.
Oral Hygiene: After 24 hours, use warm salt water rinses (one-half teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Brush your teeth gently with a soft manual toothbrush after 24 hours, being careful around surgical areas.
Suture Care: Sutures may be placed after surgery and usually dissolve on their own.
Swelling Management: Apply a cold compress to the face near the surgical site for the first 36 hours to minimize swelling. Afterward, use moist heat to reduce swelling.
Dietary Restrictions: Drink plenty of fluids and avoid spicy, acidic, sharp, and crunchy foods like tacos, chips, and nuts. Refrain from using tobacco and alcohol, especially in combination with pain medications or antibiotics.
Activity Restrictions: Keep physical activities minimal immediately following surgery and avoid strenuous activity for 2-3 days.
Bandage Care: If a surgical bandage was used, leave it in place for 24 hours. Once removed, gently clean the wound with a cotton swab dipped in mouth rinse.
Remember, if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding or swelling, or have any questions or concerns, please contact our office. We’re here to ensure your recovery goes smoothly and answer any queries you may have.
