Post-Bone Graft Care Instructions

After undergoing a bone graft procedure, follow these guidelines for optimal healing:

  • Bleeding Management: Avoid disturbing the area and refrain from forcefully rinsing or spitting. Bite down on a gauze pad placed on the wound for 30 minutes to reduce bleeding. Contact our office if bleeding persists.

  • Medication: Take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses, as directed.

  • Oral Hygiene: Use warm salt water rinses (one-half teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Brush your teeth gently with a soft manual toothbrush. Sutures may be placed after surgery and usually dissolve on their own.

  • Swelling Management: Apply ice packs to the surgical site for 15-20 minutes followed by resting for the same amount of time. This helps diminish swelling in the next 48-72 hours.

  • Bone Graft Dislodgment: It’s normal for pieces of the bone graft material to dislodge from the surgery site within 2 weeks post-surgery. These small pieces taste similar to salt granules and do not require intervention.

  • Dietary Restrictions: Drink plenty of fluids and avoid spicy, sharp, and crunchy foods. Refrain from using tobacco and alcohol, especially in combination with pain medications or antibiotics.

  • Activity Restrictions: Keep physical activities minimal immediately following surgery. If a surgical bandage was used, leave it in place for 24 hours. Do not remove it; it will come off when ready.

  • Suture Care: Follow up with the office for suture removal within one week post-surgery if necessary. Call the office for any questions about healing or suture type.

  • Healing Time: The bone graft site needs approximately 4-6 months to heal before implant placement. Consult your doctor to determine the follow-up schedule.

Remember to follow any additional instructions provided by the office and take all medications as prescribed to prevent infection. If you have any questions or concerns about your healing process, do not hesitate to contact our office. We’re here to ensure your recovery goes smoothly.
