Post-Biopsy Care Instructions
After undergoing a biopsy procedure, adhere to the following guidelines for optimal healing:
Bleeding Management: Refrain from disturbing the area, forcefully rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw. If bleeding persists beyond 24 hours, bite down on a gauze pad placed on the wound for 30 minutes and contact our office if necessary. Take all prescribed medications, including mouth rinses.
Oral Hygiene: After 24 hours, use warm salt water rinses (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 4-5 times a day after meals. Brush your teeth gently with a soft manual toothbrush. Be cautious around the surgical areas. Sutures may be placed after surgery, and most dissolve on their own. If a LASER was used, refrain from manipulating the site to avoid re-bleeding.
Swelling Management: Apply ice packs to the surgical site for 15-20 minutes followed by rest for the same duration. After 24 hours, if swelling persists, apply a warm pack in 15-minute intervals as needed to reduce discomfort and swelling.
Dietary Restrictions: Drink plenty of fluids and avoid spicy, sharp, and crunchy foods. Refrain from tobacco and alcohol for 24 hours following surgery, especially in combination with pain medications or antibiotics.
Activity Restrictions: Keep physical activities minimal immediately following surgery.
After-Hours Assistance: During office hours, immediate attention will be provided to address any concerns. After office hours, contact our office for further instructions. In case of a serious or life-threatening emergency, dial 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
Follow these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery process. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. We’re here to support you throughout your healing journey.
